Located within the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital in Saskatoon, our gastroenterology team has nurses, dieticians, speech therapists, social workers and specialist physicians all working together. The division provides outpatient clinical care and a clinical treatment centre (CTC) for the children in Saskatchewan as well as consulting services to the many young patients staying at the hospital.
The division of pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition cares for children with the following complex medical conditions:
- Inflammatory bowel disease
- Celiac disease
- Gastrointestinal bleeding
- Gastrointestinal polyps
- Eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease
- Intestinal failure
- Cystic fibrosis
- Peptic ulcer disease
- Chronic pancreatitis
- Severe chronic constipation
- Chronic liver and biliary disease
- Liver transplantation
- Functional gastrointestinal and motility disorders
- Complex feeding and nutritional disorders
To access this service, a referral from a pediatrician or family physician is required. We are a small but growing division, caring for over 1,000 complex pediatric patients throughout the entire province of Saskatchewan. Appointment scheduling is prioritized based on the severity of patient symptoms, a comprehensive referral with a prior workup helps expedite patient access to this service.
If there is a change in symptoms, please contact your referring pediatrician or family doctor and ask them to update the division of pediatric gastroenterology so that a change in triage may be facilitated if required.
Please note that you may be required to follow special instructions, such as fasting or eating/drinking certain foods prior to the appointment. Additional tests and blood work may also be required before the appointment can be accommodated; relevant instructions will be communicated before the date of appointment.
Some patients may require an endoscopy. An endoscopy is a non-surgical procedure used to examine your digestive tract. This decision, and any pre-op details, will be discussed during the clinic visit prior to the scheduling of a scope.
If you cannot come to the appointment, it is important that you call the clinic as soon as possible to cancel and reschedule.
