It’s a good idea to have your hospital bag packed before going into labour. Listed below are items that are required and some suggestions to help you pack for your hospital-birth.
The items for you that we recommend you bring to the hospital are:
- Prenatal records, given to you by a health-care provider
- Saskatchewan or provincial health services card
- Insurance cards
- Birth plan, if you have one
- Underwear
- Loose-fitting clothing for you to go home in
- Deodorant and a toothbrush/toothpaste
- Toiletries and clothes for your support person/partner
The items for your baby that you are required to bring to the hospital are:
- Car seat that meets Canadian Safety Standards
- Baby clothing, hat and blanket for baby to go home in
Additional Items
Additional items you may want to bring with you:
- Music
- Drinks (non-alcoholic)
- Food and snacks
- Money for the vending machine or cafeteria (support person must purchase or bring their own food)
- Nightgown or comfortable clothes to wear while in-hospital
- Slippers
- Personal toiletries like shampoo and conditioner, soap and contact lens solution
- Breastfeeding bra or larger bra
- Extra pillows
- Breastfeeding pillow
- Phone charger
All valuable items or large sums of money should be left at home. Please be aware that hospitals are scent-free areas. Leave perfumed lotions and other scented products at home.
Provided Items
The items provided in-hospital are:
- Open-back nightgown and housecoat
- Kleenex
- Sanitary pads
- Breast pads
- Meals and beverages for maternal patient
- Diapers, gowns and blankets for baby
- Bed or sleeping surface for your partner or support
- Portable breast pump to use in-hospital
All bed linens, hospital-supplied clothing and breast pumps used in-hospital are hospital property and must be returned before you go home.
