After your baby is 24 hours of age, a healthcare provider will collect a blood sample from your baby for the Newborn Screening.. This screening tests for over 32 different metabolic and endocrine disorders. The test is done by pricking the heel of your baby and a spot of blood is put onto a card. You can help your baby cope with pain by holding, soothing and breastfeeding / chestfeeding while this test is being done.
The results of the screen will show if your baby has a high or low risk which is sent to the hospital and/or healthcare provider.
