Midwifery

Registered Midwives are primary health care providers and are experts in low risk pregnancy, birth and postpartum. They provide medical care to you and your baby during pregnancy, birth and for the first 6 weeks after the birth for both of you.

Provincial Midwifery Care

A Registered Midwife is an independent health care provider who works with you and your baby to provide medical care, support and guidance during pregnancy, labour, birth and for six weeks after your baby is born. Registered Midwives are licensed and regulated by the Saskatchewan College of Midwives. When you are under the care of a midwife, you do not see another care provider for the pregnancy, birth and for the first 6 weeks after the birth for you and your baby.

You will receive the same low risk clinical care provided by physicians. Your midwife can offer, order and interpret diagnostic tests such as ultrasounds, blood work, and prescribe and administer medications.

While some aspects of care are similar, the midwifery model of care is unique. Midwives have a mandate to attend to you and your family in a safe, holistic, culturally and socially sensitive manner.

Midwifery in Saskatchewan offers:

  • informed choice
  • continuity of care-provider
  • choice of birth place
  • evidence-based practice
  • professional autonomy
  • collaborative practice

Provincial Midwifery Care is by self-referral or you can ask for a referral from your health care provider. The priority for midwifery care is for anyone who faces a barrier to accessing prenatal, birth and postpartum care.  Please send referral to the appropriate email based on your closest location*.
