Occupational Therapy services are available for the assessment and treatment of children from birth to school aged.
Occupational Therapists can assist children who experience barriers to everyday life skills including:
- basics such as meal time, bath time, dressing/undressing
- regular ‘kid things’ such as playing with toys, making friends, doing crafts, and paying attention in school.
The Occupational Therapist will play with your child, ask you lots of questions about your child’s everyday life, and will provide you with suggestions for any barriers impacting your child’s ability to be successful with everyday ‘kid things’.
For babies and children who are admitted to hospital, an Occupational Therapist can help with:
- activities to help your child get stronger and more independent,
- safe positioning,
- discharge planning,
- identifying equipment needs (wheelchair, tub seat, car seat, etc),
- assisting to connect your child to outpatient therapies if needed
Physical Therapy services at the JPCH are available for assessment and treatment of children from birth to the age of 16.
Physical Therapists working in Outpatients help children with physical or developmental concerns which can include:
- Orthopedic injuries
- Conditions causing pain or impacting function
- Rehabilitation following surgery
- Head shape asymmetries or torticollis
- Slow achievement of motor milestones/skills
- Coordination disorders
- Cardiac conditions that impact function
- Oncological conditions with physical impairments
- Acute/subacute rehabilitation needs following an acute care discharge
For babies and children who are admitted to hospital, a Physical Therapist on the IPP team can help with:
- Recovering strength and mobility
- Managing chest or respiratory conditions
- Accessing equipment, such as walkers or crutches, and receiving education following orthopedic injury or surgery.
- Discharge planning and helping to set up outpatient follow up as needed
Our therapists can be found helping infants and children on the pediatric ward, in Pediatric Intensive Care, in the NICU or on Maternal Services
Children’s Therapy services are provided Monday to Friday between the hours of 0800 - 1630. Weekend and holiday coverage for Physical Therapy is currently in place between 0800 – 1630 for inpatients only.
