Caring for a child with an immune system disorder can be challenging. The program provides assessment, treatment, and education. Understanding the basics of immunology can help you to better support your child's health.
What is Pediatric Immunology?
Pediatric immunology is a specialized field of medicine focused on children's immune systems. The immune system is your child's defense against infections (like viruses and bacteria), diseases (like cancer), and other harmful substances. When the immune system isn't working correctly, it can lead to various health problems.
The Pediatric immunology team will assess, diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions, including:
- Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID)
- Frequent, severe, or unusual infections (e.g., pneumonia, ear infections, sinus infections)
- Infections that don't respond well to standard antibiotics
- Failure to thrive or slow growth
- Autoimmune problems (where the immune system attacks the body's own healthy cells)
- Inflammation in various organs
The Allergy Clinic is under development.
Talk to your doctor or nurse practitioner. Pediatricians or Pediatric Subspecialty can make a referral to the program.
Practitioner referrals can be sent through Med Access EMR or a referral form.
